Across the UK, millions of perfectly usable devices are sitting forgotten in drawers and cupboards. At the same time, 1.6 million UK adults don’t have a smartphone, tablet or laptop of their own, while an estimated 11.7 million working laptops are sitting unused in UK homes.

This is a gap that local Community Interest Company Reboot IT For All is working to close.

Based in Staffordshire, Reboot IT For All collects unwanted laptops, tablets, mobile phones and other working technology, securely wipes the data, refurbishes the devices and gets them back into use through local charities, schools, community groups and councils.

The model is deliberately local: local people and businesses donate the technology, local students help refurbish it, and local people benefit from it. Through Reboot’s work with college T-Level students, donated devices also provide hands-on experience in checking, diagnosing, repairing and preparing technology for its next user.

And the impact goes beyond digital inclusion. Extending the life of technology means fewer usable devices becoming electronic waste and reduces demand for new equipment. Manufacturing new technology carries a significant environmental footprint. Reboot estimates around 300kg CO₂e for a laptop, 100kg for a tablet and 50kg for a mobile phone. Giving existing technology a second life is therefore a simple way to support both people and the circular economy.

Bring your unused tech to Climate Expo

Reboot IT For All will be exhibiting at the Midlands Climate Expo & Sustainability Conference at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Friday 25 September, and they’re bringing their tech donation stand with them.

If you have a working laptop, tablet or mobile phone that is less than nine years old and no longer needed, bring it along. Every device is securely data wiped at Reboot HQ to police-approved standards before it is refurbished or passed on, with data-wipe certificates available on request.

One device cleared from a cupboard could become the technology somebody locally needs for work, education, accessing services or simply staying connected.
