Why Alton Towers Was the Natural Choice for This Year’s Climate Expo

As the Climate Expo & Sustainability Conference continues to grow year on year, so too does our ambition, not just for the event itself, but for the experience we offer delegates, exhibitors and speakers. Rooted firmly in Staffordshire and its surrounding regions, the Expo has become a leading platform for bringing together those working towards a more sustainable, resilient and collaborative future for the area.
With rising attendance and an increasingly interactive format, we knew it was time to evolve and that meant finding a venue that could meet both the practical demands of the Expo and the values that underpin it.
This year, we’re pleased to announce that the Expo will take place at Alton Towers Conference Centre – a decision shaped by a number of important factors.
A Venue That Meets the Moment
Over the past few years, feedback from delegates has helped us understand what works and what could work better. We heard calls for improved layout, better accessibility between spaces, and a venue that could accommodate more people without losing the energy and intimacy of the event.
Alton Towers met that brief. The dedicated conference centre offers a purpose-built environment, with the speaker hall, exhibition area, and workshop rooms all within the same footprint, creating a more cohesive, inclusive and efficient delegate experience. Crucially, it also gives us the room to grow, while staying true to our regional focus.
Sustainability in Practice
We also wanted a venue that aligned with the spirit of the Expo; one that was not only open to hosting conversations about climate action, but was also making its own changes behind the scenes.
Alton Towers has made meaningful operational improvements in recent years. A major development was the installation of a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) unit alongside the resort’s waterpark. This alone has helped reduce the site’s overall carbon footprint by more than 15%, while achieving energy efficiency rates of around 80% by generating power at source.
Elsewhere across the resort, systems have been upgraded to include energy-efficient LED lighting and smart air-conditioning units that automatically revert to low-power settings when rooms are not in use. Small changes that add up across a 550-acre site.
Supporting Greener Travel
While Alton Towers’ rural location provides a unique setting in the Staffordshire landscape, we also recognise the importance of enabling sustainable access for attendees.
That’s why we’ve partnered with Roberts Travel Group to provide a green electric shuttle service from the nearest train station, Uttoxeter, directly to the venue. It’s a practical step that supports our delegates in choosing lower-carbon travel options and helps reduce the overall transport footprint of the event.

At its heart, the Climate Expo is about people, place, and possibility. With Alton Towers, we’ve found a venue that allows us to bring those together, showcasing what’s happening across Staffordshire while making space for new ideas, new partnerships, and real progress. We look forward to welcoming you this September.
